Assignment 1-2 Defining Pop Culture

Popular Culture is defined as contemporary lifestyle and items that are well known and generally accepted, cultural patterns that are widespread within a population; also called pop culture (dictionary.com, nd). When an individual ponders to their self what pop culture means, a few thoughts might come to mind, such as; music, movies, books, internet, clothing, and perhaps piercings and tattoos.  Although modern pop culture includes such a wide variety of items, attitudes, and languages, it is generally something that can be purchased seen, and/or heard. Pop culture is always shifting as each generation and culture holds a different idea of what is popular (Nair, 2010).
When I think of a pop culture and artifacts, the one thing that I kept coming back to is Elvis Presley. I believe that Elvis is one of the most influential icons in pop culture due to his charisma, talent, and his ability to entertain. He was able to take black music and present it to white audiences in a non-threatening way as not send America into a racial nervous breakdown (Kellner, n.d.).  I believe that Elvis will forever remain a pop culture icon.

  1. Kristen,

Elvis Presley is such a huge phenomenon! I think his music has touched so many people. I have to agree with you that he is one of the most influential icons. His talents are untouchable. I think with Elvis being televised people were able to really capture the essence of who he was. What a great example of popular culture. The definition you have provided us is spot on. I like the words cultural patterns. It is such a great way to explain what popular culture is all about. Great posting!
